At the 26th conference on the coordination of local clinics and hospitals regarding liver diseases (June 2017, Yokohama), we reported on the "Issues related to liver function testing during medical examinations in the workplace from the view of industrial physicians.” Every employee undergoes liver function testing each year as a provision designated by law; however, despite being encouraged to see a doctor, their primary care doctors may not carry out a sufficiently careful examination in many cases, making it difficult to say that the results of liver function testing are effectively used. The reasons for this situation are thought to include the fact that the diseases being targeted are unclear, along with the fact that appropriate cutoff values and protocols of secondary examinations for non-specialists are not indicated. For example, in HbA1c tests and urine analysis, clear indicators related to these are widely used. It is relatively easy for industrial physicians to extract appropriate subjects and encourage them to visit a doctor, in addition to being easy for referred medicinal institutions to carry out proper secondary examinations. Going forward, it is hoped that these issues on liver diseases will be resolved.
